Calibration Required

To ensure accurate measurements, the Amsler grid must be exactly 10 cm × 10 cm.

This line should measure exactly 5 cm (1.97 inches)

Use a physical ruler to measure the line above:

Current size: 10.0 cm

Tips:

  • Use a real ruler or measuring tape
  • Measure from the left edge to the right edge of the line
  • Adjust until it measures exactly 5 cm

How to Use the Amsler Grid

  1. Distance: Position the grid 12-15 inches (30-38 cm) from your eyes in good lighting.
  2. Glasses: Wear your reading glasses if you normally use them.
  3. Cover One Eye: Cover one eye with your hand.
  4. Focus on Center Dot: Look directly at the center dot with your uncovered eye. Keep staring at it.
  5. Check the Grid: While focusing on the center dot, use your peripheral vision to check:
    • Are all grid lines straight? (not wavy or distorted)
    • Are all areas clear? (no dark, blurry, or blank spots)
    • Can you see all four corners?
  6. Test Other Eye: Repeat with your other eye covered.

⚠️ When to Contact Your Doctor:

If you notice wavy lines, blurry areas, dark spots, or distortions, contact your eye doctor immediately.

This grid is used to monitor macular degeneration and other vision changes. Regular daily testing is recommended for those at risk.
